Guiltless Polish Soup

Yes, I know that's quite a contradiction. I've been reading the raw food detox diet, and honestly its vegan forcefulness has been making me hungry. My review of the book will be posted once I have tried out the recipes (not everyone can shop at Whole Foods and spend a lot of money on juicers).

ANYWAY

This post is about midnight munchers. You feel guilty for eating at night, right? you want to dive into the ramen for dinner because well, its easy. Well if you want to find a low calorie option, look no further. I found the wonders of Polish soup!

Fortunately I live in a neighborhood that sells Polish foods. I was looking in my cabinets and found this beauty Polish vegetable soup. Granted I didn't know how to make it. I boiled some water, pour the contents in, and it smelled like ramen! Add some whole wheat pasta and BAM you got yourself a low calories meal

No More Half Assin' Raw Food Diet: Internet Search

So since I've been half assin' my raw food detox diet, I figured I'd round up all my ingredients do a little research and drink smoothies.

Heres my no more half assin smoothie

High fiber fruits add the base to your smoothie, while also speeds the bulk of foods in your intestines which helps your digestive system. It also controls my IBS (which is probably too much information for you but whateves!) .
  • one apple (with the skins)

Antioxidants:  As you always heard the role in antioxidants in your diet is important. Apparently it helps detox your liver while also taking toxins out of your body. They also prevent disease (especially in the liver).
  • blueberries, strawberries and raspberries

  • Flax seed oil has three main ingredients within it 1) Omega 3 for a healthy heart 2) Lignans, which have both plant estrogen and antioxidant qualities. and 3) Fiber. Flaxseed contains both the soluble and insoluble types.

Citrus Fruit:  break ups mucus and plague in the digestive tract. Plus it supplies vitamin C. It also makes it yummy for me which is the most important thing about this!
  • Pineapple is a natural sugar. It breaks up waste in your small intestine and reduces inflammation while also regulating  the processes of the glandular systems, which produce necessary hormones  It also helps with allergies
  •  and tangerines (with the white bulk on it, because it contains the most nutrients

Glorious German Chocolate Cake

My girlfriend and I usually have a tradition of cooking for a special occasion or just for hunger. When the new year came we decided to make German food. This included red cabbage, spaetzle mac and cheese, potato dumplings and my contribution was German Chocolate Cake. I have some German heritage in me, and I've been craving this for a long time. You can't just go to the supermarket and get it! If you are a chocolate lover, I'm sure you'll love this.
  • You will need:

  • Bakers German Chocolate (4  1oz bars)
    1/2 cup Melted butter
    • 1 cup of sugar
    • 2 egg yolks
    • 2 egg whites
    • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
    • 1/2 cup of buttermilk
    • 1 and 1/4 cup of Cake Flour (I used self rising flour and it seemed to work)
    • 1/2 cup of baking soda
    • 1/4 teaspoon of salt

    Filling:
    1/2 cup white sugar
1/3 cup and 2 tablespoons and 1 teaspoon evaporated milk
    1/4 cup butter
    1-1/2 egg yolks, beaten
    2/3 cup flaked coconut
    1/2 cup chopped pecans
    1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

    1/4 teaspoon shortening
1/2 (1 ounce) square semisweet chocolate
    maraschino cherries
This recipe was taken from allrecipes.com

Preheat oven to 350%. Grease and flour 3 - 9 inch round pans. Sift together the flour, baking soda and salt. Set aside. In a small saucepan, heat water and 4 ounces chocolate until melted (you can put more in if you wish). Remove from heat and allow to cool (don't wait too long for it to cool or it will become stiff)
In a large bowl, cream (blend together using hand held blender) 1 cup butter and 2 cups sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in 4 egg yolks one at a time (seriously do it one at a time. to separate the yolks crack open the egg gently and place yolk back and forth on each shell over a bowl). Blend in the melted chocolate mixture and vanilla. Beat in the flour mixture alternately with the buttermilk, mixing just until incorporated.
In a large glass or metal mixing bowl, beat egg whites until stiff peaks form (this was hard for me to attempt so don't feel bad if you fail). Fold 1/3 of the whites into the batter (softly), then quickly fold in remaining whites until no streaks remain.
Pour into 3 - 9 inch pans Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Allow to cool for 10 minutes in the pan, then turn out onto wire rack (or open a window and allow to cool within the pans).

To make the Filling: In a saucepan combine 1 cup sugar, evaporated milk, 1/2 cup butter, and 3 egg yolks. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly until thickened. Remove from heat. Stir in coconut, pecans and vanilla (for an added touch toast pecans and coconut). Cool until thick enough to spread. (my spread did not thicken until it was refrigerated)
Spread filling between layers and on top of cake. In a small saucepan, melt shortening and 1 ounce of chocolate. Stir until smooth and drizzle down the sides of the cake. (this is optional)

I placed maraschino cherries on top along with the filling.

      Holy Hawaiian BBQ Pizza

Hawaiian pizza is typically known for having ham and pineapple together, however, I made my own version. This only takes a few steps and it' a quick meal!
      You will need:

      • pizza dough (I got mine already made by Trader Joe's)
      • pineapple
      • bbq sauce
      • marinara sauce
      • mozzarella cheese
      • flour
      • non stick spray or olive oil

Step 1. Allow the pizza dough to rest at room temperature for about 20 minutes.
Step 2. Sprinkle flour on a surface and knead the pizza dough (I personally do this with my hands, however, it would be better if you had a rolling pin. My girlfriend used a big salt container, but a big salt sea came coming in)
Step 3. Grease pan with spray or oil and place dough on baking pan.

Step 4. Add the ingredients. Add desired amount of sauce, sprinkle some shredded mozzarella on top, add your chopped pineapple, add desired amount of bbq sauce.

Step 5. Place pizza in 375 degree oven. Cook for about 8-10 minutes or until cheese is melted.

And then finally, place in mouth and make heavenly sounds.

Lame food fact: Hawaiian pizza isn't from Hawaii, it was invented in Canada.

      Why Vegetarian?

My girlfriend's blog (queer food) inspired me to make a BAM IN YOUR FACE vegetarian blog since she eats bacon milkshakes and cow tongues. Everyone asks me "Why are you a vegetarian?". Simply put: because, I'm a vegetarian. That's your answer. This blog will share various personal recipes and also recipes from featured vegetarian books. Whether or not you cook these with a loved one, or even by yourself I'm sure you'll find them yummy, or else!

I'm a poor soon to be grad student (hopefully) and this will of course be on budget. I currently live in NYC and it's often hard to be a vegetarian here.
